Each year we have a bit of a vacation for extended family in Oceanside/Carlsbad, California. Aside from the whole thing being not on my dime (man, is that nice, especially just now), it's a week or so of relaxation at a beach house, with very little needing doing. Oh, we do a fair bit, usually: I write or practice music, build sand sculptures, collect shells, eat a lot of good food, read, photograph dolphins, ocean kayak, bicycle, fish off the pier, hang out with friends... whatever. And it's not far from places like Legoland, San Diego Zoo Safari Park, and Seaworld. But the best part is not having to actually hold to much of a schedule for a change.
Though I can only be there for 4 of the 10 days this year (alas!), I'm happy to have the time I can get. Oh, didn't I tell you? I'm at the beach house now! I left after work today and headed down. I always come back with a lot of pictures, and now that this blog is here I might even get them sorted in a timely fashion so they can be uploaded.
If you have a chance to do something like this, I do recommend it. The beach houses have a lot of bedrooms, generally, and if you have friends with you and spend a whole week, the cost per night is very reasonable, for an unreasonably good place to stay. Plus it has (naturally) a full kitchen and all, which can save you a bundle in food. We've been doing this for several years now, and is one of the things I look forward to most.
If you'll excuse me, I believe the waves are calling me. I'm going to sit on the back porch and hear what they have to say.
